Some tips for healing Pallys
« on: May 30, 2007, 01:42:16 PM »
Holy spec paladins should always use Divine Illumination should they fall below 20% mana during a fight, reduced mana cost is always vital, and is brilliant for spamming flash of light.

Always carry Mana Potions and in cases of Tempest Keep Instances stock up on Instance specific mana potions that drop in there.

"Illumination": This talent now only gives 50% of the mana cost of the critical heal.

prior to the patch this is a pretty bad downfall, Paladins won't be getting back as much mana as they used to, so you should make sure you have high base mana.

Pre-raiders should aim for about 9k mana and try to aim for 1K bonus healing.

You should spec in Light's grace (reduced casting time of next holy light for 15 seconds) as if you spam you will continuously have a reduced cast time.

Holy shock is always a nice talent, as its useful if you can't cast a healing spell in time the holy shock's instant cast spell is a life saver

Hey dude, nice post although a few corrections are needed:

the illumination nerf was 60%

10k healing is impossible lol.  Ideally you want 1200+ for heroics and 1400+ for Kara.  In answer to your question Gala, the healing bonus adds to the amount your healing spells actually heal.

Always make sure you have divine favour fired up when possible, it can often prove to be a life saver.  It is often better to fire up divine illumination at 40% rather than 20% as this will allow you room to manouvre mana wise.  Usually when you get to 20% that is when you should be throwing up mana potions.  Obviously when you are this low you should only be using Flash of Light, as Holy Light is too much of a dent on your mana reserve.

one thing that all paladins forget is: PALADINS HAVE A MELEE HEALING AOE!!

Shock Horror I know, but judging Seal of Light on the main tank's target can be a real life saver as it heals on chance of hit (high chance) and gives you a huge break.  Also if your tank is having a hard time, throw up a hammer of justice, it gives you a good 6 seconds to get your tank back up to speed.

Also theres 4 essential components to a healers tool kit:

Golden Fish Sticks
Super Mana Potion
Elixir of Healing Power
Brilliant Mana Oil

These combined with the standard buffs will make you uber healing greatness.  Its expensive to keep buying these, so keep them for runs you struggle on or guild runs.  But with these items and intellect buffs my healing is usually well over 1400 with a 177mp5 - now that is uberness....

Since the nerf, crit chance should no longer be considered when healer speccing.  Mp5 and +healing should be your main focus.

For pre-kara level you should aim for +1400 healing, 100mp5, and 9k mana. This can be done without touching heroics, and please please dont be put off to using cloth items.  Armour shouldnt be an issue when you are at the back healing, so just go for pure stats.

Ok I think I'm done....

oh and another thing, I noticed you listed a load of paladin macros in a previous thread.  I found that using heal-bot over comes all of the time and stress making macros causes.  Also there is nothing faster for healing...

And yes I know people have said that healbot isnt real healing and is cheating, but if I had a choice between keeping my group alive through easier means or letting them die through traditional healing i know which one i would choose.

I thought 10k healing would be lots! so I wondered if it convereted it to something that made sense

Now my next question is, Pre-kara, is that what you want for instances below Kara?

pre-kara is ideally the stats you should have before attempting Kara.  Although the stats look high, they are pretty easy to achieve if you're prepared to grind out the instances.  When my exams are done, I'll get to work on some healing, tanking and DPS pre-kara sets.

And yes DPS is now a viable raid spec for pallys.  From what I've seen in the forums, if you gear up properly you can top the dps tables.

Good stuff Petit. As an aside I'd recommend ALWAYS having some oil on your weapon, be it mana or wizard. It can make a big difference.

Ok, time for update:

Turning Level 80 you should look for a start:

Reputation:
Shield:  Lordaeron's Resolve http://www.wowhead.com/?item=38463 Alliance Vanguard Revered
Main-hand: Gavel of the Brewing Storm http://www.wowhead.com/?item=44199 The Wyrmrest Accord - Revered
Cloak: Shroud of Dedicated Research http://www.wowhead.com/?item=44167 Kirin Tor - Honored
Bracers: Bracers of Accorded Courtesy http://www.wowhead.com/?item=44197 The Wyrmrest Accord - Honored
Legs: Standard Issue Legguards http://www.wowhead.com/?item=44239 Argent Crusade - Honored

AH-Blues:
Chest: Patina-Coated Breastplate http://www.wowhead.com/?item=37672
Hands: Web Winder Gloves http://www.wowhead.com/?item=37625
Necklace: Dragon Prow Amulet http://www.wowhead.com/?item=37290
Ring: Dream Signet (various versions) http://www.wowhead.com/?item=42340

Crafted:
Head: Ornate Saronite Skullshield http://www.wowhead.com/?item=42728
Feet: Ornate Saronite Walkers http://www.wowhead.com/?item=42730

Quests:
Shoulders: Pauldrons of Morbidus http://www.wowhead.com/?item=44381

If you start your first heroics, you should bring:
Elixir of Mighty Thoughts  http://www.wowhead.com/?spell=60367
Spellpower Elixir http://www.wowhead.com/?spell=53842
Rhino Dogs (12 Mp5 + 30 Stam), Mighty Rhino Dogs (16 Mp5 +  40 Stam), Spicy Fried Herring (16 Mp5 + 40 Stam), Tender Shoveltusk Steak (46 Spell + 40 Stam) or Firecracker Salmon (46 Spell + 40 Stam)

You'll also need an assful of Manapool (Petit has 18.5k buffed).

Please note that Mana or Wizard Oils dont work anymore.

When you have 15 Emblems of Heroism, you should buy Libram of Renewal http://www.wowhead.com/?item=40705.

Good to read: http://elitistjerks.com/f76/t35975-holy_paladin_guide_wotlk/ as the guide that Splishy posted doesnt work.

Would go for this Helm of Purified Thoughts http://www.wowhead.com/?item=44296 Instead of the crafted Ornate Saronite Skullshield. It does however requires Exalted with Argent Dawn.
And soon i can make Brilliant Titansteel Helm http://www.wowhead.com/?item=41388 if there is any Holy Pally wanting them.

Indeed, this is a much better choice but I figured that no Pally is exalted with AC when he hits Level 80  :D So all those items are for starting-purposes only :)

The Titansteel is mostly useless for holy paladins, who should be stacking inetellect as their primary stat. It's of use to retri paladins who will eb aiming more for spellpower and crit though. The crafted Ornate Saronite stuff is good starter gear for baseline level 80 stuff (including heroics and some PVP) but will be quickly replaced. The Helm of Purified Thoughts is pretty nice, but chances of being exalted with AC as soon as you hit 80 are slim to say the least.

Yes: I read a chunk of EJ stuff last night. Spirit is *still* useless to paladins as they're never outside the 5SR in combat. MP5 is... ok, but the assumption is that you have Divine Pleae and pop it *every* cooldown and as such you get more back from stacking intellect from this (which gives you both more mana and 1/3 of it's value in crit), as well as crit for the mana return on Illumination.

Holy Shock is a viable instacast heal which if enough intellect is present and used in conjunction with Divine Illumination for that guaranteed crit.

More to come when I've read more!

Retri paladins don't want spell power at all, they want strength and AP.  Brilliant titansteel is purely a holy pala gear, just not very good :)
