23/01 Arena: Red letter day

I guess the people most likely to be reading this are the people who were there but just in case...

...WE WON \o/

No, seriously, we won 7 out of 10 matches.  Focus fire is happening, resilience is keeping people alive long enough to react, I still hate mortal strike (oops, how did that slip in?).  Would have been 8-2 if it hadn't been for a rogue with ridiculous damage output that just wouldn't die.

Congratulations to everyone who played, the best result in our arena history.  We got slightly lucky with teams I think but not going to complain about that

4 of us went on and did an AB after ZF and we won that too so all in all a good evening for SoG PvP .

This is turning into a rogue-thread. Anyway, 312 Resilience for the win and I still die, first target each and every time. in the future I'll simply stay stealthed till the fight starts so that they pick another target. Yay for us.

Was a great night. I usually struggle to overview the situation, so too often I´m on the wrong target for a couple of seconds - yesterday I made excessive use of the "targets target" function, though. Clicked on my fellow DPS collegues, saw their target, attacked it. Felt much better.

Also my spec isn´t ideal, I´ll try a slightly different, but definitely more group-boosting build next week - plus I´m really thinking about a scorpid pet + improved stings for reduced ability to dispell viper.

All in all last night was a great example of how far we can get when we focus, try to stay calm in hectic situations and communicate. The games we lost were lost due to identifiable mistakes, at least I can say that for myself. Not being in Daffyds range, not nuking the right target immediately, struggling with keeping up viper sting on mana users. Things one can work on.

So - I´m looking forward to next week.

I loved the part where I got focused on, daffyd blew cooldowns trying to keep me up, as soon as I could I used Feign Death and they actually thought I died  Daffyd got me back to 100% and we went onto win

As of next week I start the early shifts at work, so if you still need a healer for arenas I can commit to one night a week (I may be able to do more than that, but one night is all I'm committing to) if you want me on board.

cleaned up thread to take the rogue love-in to the rogue section

Does that mean you'll become one of our regular Heroic-evening healers again? *crosses fingers*

If I join up it will be as a regular, but I've never done Arena before, so be gentle.

Daff - is there still a spot free, and if so what do I need to do?

We will be, unfortunately I can pretty much guarantee the opposition won't

Yes there is, you need to donate 40g to the guild bank and grab me next time I'm online.

You also need to install Proximo or an arena target unit frame that supports Proximo sync, you can get it at http://www.curse.com/downloads/details/8291/

Will sort that lot out tonight. I suppose I'd better do some reading about how arena points work, nothing motivates like having shinies to aim for (hell, it's worked for the Gladiator's Salvation which will be mine next week)

Fantastic, that finally you want to join, after a while it will increase our value as a team with two healers
We almost always struggle against that kind of group.

As I say, I can't promise that I'll be any good (based on my reading so far it seems that I'm going to be a bit rubbish until I learn the ropes at least) but it should be a giggle. And it seems that having 2 members of a 5v5 who are capable of healing (if not necessarily healer specced) is rather a key requirement if you're to do well in general.

4 DPS is sort of viable but your DPS have to be bloody good and you really REALLY want a warrior leading the assist train.  3 DPS you don't lose that much DPS but you double your survivability, judging by the top teams and our own poor performance against 3 DPS that's not a bad thing.  Assuming there's no priest around to burst your bubble you can have 10 seconds of completely unstoppable healing, you'll quickly (cheap shot->kidney shot->counterspell->fear->death coil->silence) come to appreciate that as you spend half your time with your character not under your control.  Don't know if you have the trinket or not but if you don't you really should get it, even if only the cheapo 5 minute cooldown version as it's pretty much essential PvP wear that never goes out of fashion.

As for knowing what to do as a paladin I can't really say much.  Blessing of sacrifice rank 1 is a great CC breaker, blessing of freedom on a heavy DPS (warrior usually) means someone is in for a world of pain, hammer of justice on a healer as someone on the other team is close to dying can stop that them getting off that essential heal, concentration aura if you want to actually finish a cast some time this year, and that's about all I know about pala PvP.

Up to you whether you get the honour gear or not but resilience makes such a massive difference it's unfunny, making Horde rogues cry with frustration is a major hobby of mine

Reminder to all those who recently joined us who don't have Proximo installed to install it before tonight's arena session please.

Well.. that was an interesting introduction to Arena. Won 5, lost 5.

In all honesty other than the first match (which I would have been better prepared for had it come later in the set, but that was always going to be the case) I thought we performed pretty well. We were steamrollered only twice.

See y'all the same time next week!

As usual we found ourselves facing stronger opponents, but learning and improving as well. Focus fire - which probably is the key to a big chunk o´ success at our rating level - works significantly better than not too long ago. We at least try to stay in healing range. And improving the balance between both CC and damage output makes our fights more controlled and the course of events more traceable. Even when we lose.

Most notably we had a blast, so I´m looking forward to next week!

It didn't go too badly at all, I think the next thing to master is when to CC the healers.  If we're trying to burst someone down there's little point in CCing the healers at 100% and there's no point in burning someone down to 10% only to have an 8k heal hit.  The first 50% should be controlled DPS and burst cooldowns used to finish them off while the healer is CCd.

We're getting better still, 3 DPS is a big playstyle change to 4 DPS so to hold our own with our first week of trying it was a pleasant surprise.

I really need to get that 2minute trinket, the 5 minute one just ain't cutting it. I was trying to save bubble for times when I was actually taking hits (particularly if I was being focus fired) and getting the chance to pop my trinket once per fight was... not enough, especially in fights with 2 or more mobs with fears.

It's also quite fun simply because it's all over so quickly - an hour a week is easy to fit in, even on a pretty tight schedule.
