What type of mage are you?
« on: August 13, 2006, 08:55:15 PM »
This is more of an opinions thread than a help thread, but it should still prove useful.

What type of mage are you?  I have spec'd my mage up to Fire, and have enjoyed the joys of what have to be some of the most powerful attacks in the game.  But as I have advanced in level I have found myself facing more creatures that resist my spells and with places like Searing Gorge just around the corner, which sounds hot, it's going to be a bit of a nightmare.  I am thinkng of starting over with my Talent Points but I was wondering what others did with their Talent Points, particularly lvl 60's who have made it through the highest dungeons.

So, any advice on this would be great, Cheers!

this is something that interests me too, since ricecake is a mage, atm i have some points in Arcane so that Arcane missiles cannot be interrupted and i get that nifty clearcast state then i have some in frost which i'm planning on putting up to lower the cooltime of Frost nova and the resistance chance of my fire and ice spells.

Fire all the way for Fortuna - when I started him off it seemed that there was a massive amount of frost mages around, but the fire attacks seem more... well, fun really!

Telesto is only L46 but has been fire since the word go and I don't think I'll change, ice is too slow paced for me I'm more of a fan of the mental burst damage fire provides.

Fire immune mobs are a pain in the ass but certainly shouldn't push you into the ice tree alone. At 60 you'll be facing undead more than anything to start with and worrying about fire/ice doesn't really kick in till MC. A fire mage in MC isn't all that useful, big frostbolt crits are where it's at then.

I made it to 60 with my mage and my talents are mostly spend in fire I also did some things in Arcane like the clearcast state but ever sinds they revamped the mage talents this one isn't verry usefull any more. there is however a nice thing in arcane that grants a mage an armor bonus according to its intellect.

Gozznik is still a youngin', but after having read through all the skill trees, fire to me, also seems like the way to go.

But with a player who knows how to handle his mage, Arcane and Frost seems to work equally well.

at the moment rhimos is only half way through but im goin for a fairly equal fire and frost build (7-23-21 to be exact) most r in fire at the most to help lvl faster. looked like quite a nice build to try and a bit different from most ive heard so far, any suggestions towards this most grateful

after alot of jumping builds and skills I respecced back to my original wich was fire. The first thing I noticed is that gear makes an assload of difference. but in general I would say arcane is a good leveling/pvp spec fire and frost are more the pve and dungeon/raid builds. Frost is hard btw (I hate croudcontrlling a large amount of mobs   )

Frost isn't hard, just... different. I can output a steady, reasonable amount of dmg without too much risk of drawing aggro from the tank.

You also have some very cool, forgive the pun, abilities in the Frost tree including Ice Block, which is something that I would love access to.  But with my best kit being the Spellfire gear (+damage to Fire and Arcane spells) I would be a fool to respec.  Perhaps if I ever get anything better I will give frost some serious play time.  But since I am unlikely to upgrade this is not likely.  I have tried Frost a few times for a couple of days at a time and missed the damage after playing with fire for so long, but I consider it more useful and at times even more fun than fire.  There are only so many times you can nuke the crap out of stuff before it becomes a routine..

As I say, frost isn't hard, just different. The frost tree in general has more survivability (frost shield, ice block) - I have toyed with the idea of a respec to up my dps, but the frozen shadowweave set cost me a boatload to make, and I'm not dropping it for anything. That said I am still considering the spellstrike hood and pants as my current legs (imbued netherweave) could really be improved. I'm also going to have to start looking long and hard at a new wand too...

In all honesty I'm expecting the mage to be rebalanced some patch soon, and I'll probably tweak my build then as there are a couple of things I'm starting to wish I had specced slightly differently but it really isn't worth going the whole hog and respeccing from what I have for now.

Ditto, I believe the patterns have a very low drop rate however.

on sylantar i went from lvl 1 to 60 fire spec then mucked around for a few levels with frost then went back to fire.

total pyromanic at the moment. i lurve the fire spells...

here's my current talent tree  -

talent trees

it took a lot of playing about to get it this way. i'm hoping it's better than the last attempt.

i've been advised to spend more in arcane though to get the mana regen rate up but i kinda like it this way.
