Looking at the damage charts for Saturdays MH run, Sylantar has 1900dps.  Is this accurate and if so how in God's name did you manage it?

lots and lots and lots and lots of AoE. Simple, really

You get loads of mobs, a palatank herds them all to one spot and you let rip with Blizzard.

meh, you get the idea though. Have a look at some of Pollock's recorded DPS for the Illhoof fight to get an idea...

Since TBC was released Locks beat Mages on both single target and AoE damage in general. The only thing mages can compete on these days is burst damage, with PoM/Pyro being a favourite.

Mages are in dire need of some buffing, either to be more useful or more powerful.  I think mages could have been something else altogether really, what with Hunters and Locks providing far more ranged damage.  Mages ought to have perhaps been some sort of hybrid, a dps/buff class that can also cast magical damage % absorbing shields on the group, buff other ranged attacks and weaken the enemy against various schools of magic etc.  I'd settle for this in exchange for being lower on the damage table.

I'd argue that lore-wise applying debuffs to the enemy should really have been the forte of warlocks, but... meh

Mages have become (as has been mentioned elsewhere) the logistics class: transport and catering. It's sad, but.. I'm starting to enjoy Fortuna again, though I know I can't compete on pure DPS with our raiding locks and hunters there is the fact that Polymorph is one of the most useful forms of crowd control (more predictable than fear, no diminishing returns like traps). Less a mighty wizard, more the guy who's sometimes useful to have tagging along

But I digress - 2k DPS is perfectly attainable by mages in the correct circumstances, and single target DPS ain't one of them.

Mages have broken 2.5k on Brutallus, that's a single target fight.

However I do agree mages need a little something for WoTLK.  Currently the speculation is that mages will be kings of AoE again as Seed of Corruption had a little more impact on TBC than I think Blizzard expected.
