Read this from WOW Vault . Sounds like an interesting idea for those of us who are a little less hardcore.....

Loot in BC  

A few words of philosophy from Blizzard for loot in The Burning Crusade...
The devs general philosophy is to aim more towards token systems for gear and armor sets. If you were to receive reputation tokens or some such item from a boss, which could then be spent on the item of your choice, a number of good things could come of that.

You could maintain demand for dungeon loot by having it be usable for everyone. You decrease the quantity of shards/nexus crystals being pushed into the market, because less gear is being disenchanted. You decrease the chance of seeing an item drop, that you already have/don't want, repeatedly. Granted, I don't think every piece of loot is going to be treated this way, but we are looking to provide players with more tailored methods of loot acquisition.

Have Blizzard mentioned this before, or is it a recent idea?

The trouble is that this actually makes things more hardcore. See the grind I've been on since the invasion patch for the epics that you get for tokens there.

It reduces the need to rely on DKP though which is always a good thing, at least this way it's a set quantity required for an epic rather than having to bid against someone with DKP that you might or might not win and it might or might not ever drop for you again.
