Guide for Mages

This guide is outdated

Seeing as Dar made a Disc priest guide, i felt i should make a small guide for mages. I will be adding onto it over time.

Here it goes:

FLASHKID's Awesome guide to...
MAGE

Talent Builds and Spell Rotations

Take a look here for some more in-depth shizz

There are quite a few Mixes of Mage Talents, each one is used for a different purpose.

Leveling - Frost is the best spec to go with for leveling, It deals high damage whilst being mana efficient and gives you a lot of ways to get yourself out of trouble (Slow effects, Ice barrier, improved Frost Nova etc)

PvP - There are many PvP builds to choose from, Fire and Arcane have both been known to own face in PvP, but the most used is Frost simply because of its high damage potential and survivability rating (Ice Barrier, Water elemental, Freeze effects). Heres My build,

Raiding - (See Below)

Raiding

There are 2 main Raiding Builds, Each one good in its own way.

Arcane

This is the most widely known and accepted talent build, It is renowned for its crazy, meter topping DPS capabilities in raids, Although there are many different versions of it. See WoW Popular

This is my talent build, I'm not gunna slap you round the face if you prefer your own. Click here for an interactive version

Glyphs

Glyph of Arcane Missiles - Increases critical strike bonus from Arcane missiles by 25%

Glyph of Arcane Blast - 3% increased damage from Arcane blast

Glyph of Molten Armor Armour (Stupid americans) - Grants 20% of your spirit as Critical strike rating when using.

Rotation: This build probably has the easiest spell rotation in the game. Its simple. Arcane Blast x4, Arcane Missiles (If Missile Marrage procs), Repeat. If Missile Barrage doesn't proc there are 2 options. If you are having mana problems, throw in an Arcane barrage instead of Arcane Missiles, If your doing fine with mana, Keep spamming Arcane Blast until Missile Barrage procs.
Sometimes during fights with lots of movement it would be a good idea to throw in a few Arcane Barrages just to add a bit to your DPS. Movement murders mage dps as we rely on nukes which have long-ish cast times and have no DoTs in Arcane.
I find myself running out of mana quite a lot in long boss fights, even with my 27k mana pool so make sure you have 3 Mana gems ready before each fight and cast Evocation if the worst comes to the worst.

To Sum up: Good points - High DPS potential, Easy to use, Good burst damage, Low hit cap
Bad points - Burns mana fast, Incredibly boring to play, Rubbish at fights with lots of movement

Fire + TTW

This build crept out of fashion ever since Arcane got a big boost back in patch 3.(Can't remember) however as Dar pointed out, It seems it has made a big come back being the top on a lot of the World of Logs leaderboards. I used this build myself for quite a while but struggled to make anything over 3.5k dps in raids.

Click here for an interactive version

Glyphs

Glyph of Fireball - Reduces cast time by 0.15 Seconds.

Glyph of Living Bomb - DoT Effect can now be Critical strikes.

Glyph of Molten Armor Armour (Stupid americans) - Grants 20% of your spirit as Critical strike rating when using.

Rotation: The rotation for this build is probably the most complex mage rotation, however that still means its pretty simple. Living bomb, Scorch, Fireball spam making sure everytime Hot streak procs, you cast Pyroblast. You must Maintain the Scorch debuff on the target at all times and make sure Living bomb is always up.

To Sum up: Good points - High DPS potential, Good for fights with a fair amount of movement (Living bomb + Ignite DoTs and Instant Pyroblast)
Bad points - Burns mana VERY fast, High Hit cap, relys on a high amount of Crit (To get Ignite DoT going)

Gear

"Leather!? Mail!? Plate!!?? Gief!" NO! Sorry, you can't wear it. Mages can only wear Cloth Armour. The only weapons they can use are Staffs, 1H Swords, Daggers and Wands.

Gearing your mage can be a challenge, The important thing is to know what stats you need.

Hit Rating is the most important stat, No amount of Spell power will help if you are continuously missing the target. The hit cap is 446 (17%). however if you have invested into Arcane Focus and Precision in your Talent build, you can knock 6% off that. Bringing the Mage's hit cap down to 11%. There are several other Class/race hit bonuses e.g Draenei Heroic Presence that apply to everyone but there is no telling you will have one in your raid so its best to stay safe with the cap. Being at hit cap means you will hit every mob in the game 100% of the time (level 83 being the highest possible level). You must ALWAYS have enough hit.

After Hit, You will be wanting to gear yourself in as much Spell Power as possible, you can never have too much of it. It is pure POWER.

Secondly, you'll be wanting to look for Haste rating. It is a very sexy stat for mages (Speeds up spell casting) however, it can lead to problems. More haste = Quicker Mana burning. If a mage is out of mana, he is useless. So atleast make sure you can cope with it all in boss fights by making sure you have enough mana (Although you always have Evocation and Mana gems as back up).

Another helpful stat is Critical Strike Rating. More Crit = Higher chance to get a Critical strike when hitting a mob, Ultimately doing more damage.

Intellect is also a nice stat to have but you will find it loaded on all Cloth gear anyway.

Pay no attention to Stamina or Spirit either, Clothies will get lots of it already on their gear

To Sum up, This is what you'll be wanting your priorities to look like:

Hit Rating (Until Cap) > Spell Power > Haste Rating > Critical Strike Rating > Intellect > Spirit > Stamina

What can i roll for in raids?

Anything Useable as long is it doesn't have MP5 on it.

THE BUMMER: Healers get to roll on gear with Spell Power and Haste but even if it has a trace of MP5 on, DPS can't touch it (Well you can, but you will get ripped out of in raid chat.). Also, Non-clothies can Ninja our stuffs too. Unfair? Yes. But you will have to deal with it.

Gems and Enchantments

It can be hard choosing which Gems and Enchantments you need for your Mage. I will help you decide!

Gems

Meta Gem (This goes on your head) is ALWAYS Chaotic Skyflare Diamond. You'll be needing 2 Purified Dreadstones somewhere on your gear for that to have effect.

Hit rating gems are vital if you don't have the cap yet, but once you have enough, Runed Cardinal ruby is the gem a lot of mages tend to go with. However, if you feel your lacking haste, put in some haste gems. BUT WAIT FOOL. Don't use a Runed Cardinal ruby and a Quick King's amber at the same time. If you use 2 Reckless ametrines instead, work it out einstein. You'll be gaining 1 Spell power!!!

Don't bother using Crit gems, They are not really that important and Spell power and Haste is much better.

Also, If you get a Socket bonus in your gear - e.g In my Head piece i have a +9 spell power bonus if i put a Blue gem in, so i use my Purified Dreadstone there so i get +21 spell power as well as the spirit! But don't try to get the socket bonus all the time, some of them are rubbish bonuses and they aren't worth changing gems to get.

If your a Jewelcrafter you can use 3 Improved gems (+39 spell power is a favourite)

One last tip: Don't buy slacker gems!

Enchantments

Its a bit easier choosing Enchantments than Gems, Because there aren't as many to choose from.

Head - Arcanum of Burning Mysteries (+30 Spell power and +20 Critical strike rating). You can get this from the Kirin tor quartermaster in Dalaran,  You have to be Revered with them first.

Cloak - If your a tailor use Lightweave embroidery (Chance to increase spell power by 295 for 15 seconds when casting a spell), otherwise use Enchant Cloak - Greater speed (+23 Haste rating)

Shoulders - Greater Inscription of the Storm (+24 Spell power and +15 Critical Strike Rating). You can get this from The Sons of Hodir quartermaster in Storm peaks, You need to be Exalted with them first.

Chest - Enchant Chest - Powerful stats (+10 All stats)

Bracers - Enchant Bracers - Superior Spellpower (+30 Spell Power)

Weapon - For a staff, use Enchant staff - Greater Spellpower (+81 Spell power), If your using a One handed weapon, You can either choose Enchant Weapon - Mighty Spellpower (+63 Spell power) or Enchant Weapon - Black magic (Chance to increase haste rating by 250 when using harmful spells). I think they tested that Black magic beats +63 Spell power but it doesn't beat +81 Spell power. Of course it all depends on your luck with the procs.

Hands - If your an engineer, use  Hyperspeed accelerators. Otherwise, use Enchant Gloves - Exceptional Spellpower (+28 Spell Power)

Feet - Enchant Boots - Icewalker (+12 Critical Strike rating and +12 Hit Rating)

There are also Ring Enchantments for spell power that enchanters can do to themselves.

Addons

Just some addons that i use that you may find useful for your mage.

Quartz - This has got to be my favourite addon. Basically, it replaces your old castbar with a new one showing your latency so you know exactly when to start casting your next spell for maximum dps potential. Great for both PVE and PVP.

Scorchio 2 - Tracks about everything in mage combat: Polymorph, Arcane blast stacks, Missile barrage procs, Living bomb timer, Hot streak procs etc. VERY useful for both PVE and PVP

Omen Threat meter - Yes, I am probably the worst person in wow at controlling my threat, so don't take any advice from me about it EXCEPT that Omen is the best thing at telling you if your threat levels are getting too high. It sends warnings and stuffs. So definitely a must have for mages in PVE.

Rating Buster - Handy for breaking down confusing stats on gear, e.g it will tell you how much % of hit you'll be getting from 50 hit rating.

Thats just about it really, there are other addons that you need but they are used for all classes.

I'm going to send my copyright dogs after you!

There is only one build that will give you the Crazy, Meter topping DPS that is needed for ICC. That is,  ARCANE.

I don't want to doubt your mage expertise, as i never played a mage, but....
click on this link

And count with me
6 arcane mages in the top dps in ICC
12 fire mages in the top dps in ICC
0 frost mages in the top dps in ICC

it seems that arcane is not top anymore, mate ;)

Last I read arcane was still the recommended spec for 10 mans with a switch to fire for heroic modes.

Arcane scales far better with the kind of gear I'm ever going to see in this expansion, though it is also more affected by latency.

As mentioned ingame you really need to be geared at ilvl251+ for the fire build to come into it's own: get yourself signed for some early ICC runs and you'll be amazed at how quickly you gear up.

been messing a bit with the rotation of arcane but can't find a conclusive answer. Is it better to use every arcane barrage proc or just keep on casting until you have 4 arcane blast buffs and then use it? (noticed it's possible to do 4 blast even if the barage procs on the 1st cast)

Hokay, sorry about that: I meant to put more but I got busy. I'm assuming you mean Missile Barrage rather than Arcane Barrage (ie the free Arcane Missiles that you get when it procs, rather than the 51 point spell). There's much debate as to which is correct, but essentially the rule seems to be that you build up 4 stacks of Arcane Blast, then use the proc of MBarr. If you don't get a proc of ABarr then you have 2 choices - either cast Arcane Barrage to reset the stacks of Arcane Blast and start fishing for the proc again (most mana efficient) or simply keep chaincasting Arcane Blast until you get a proc, then consume your MBarr proc with AM and start casting AB again (most damage).

The general rule of thumb seems to be that you keep casting AB until you get the MBarr proc and then eat the proc with Arcane Missiles UNLESS you're finding that you're struggling for mana. Given that the art (as far as I understand) of the Arcane Mage is to dump your mana as quickly and for as much damage as possible, then fill up and start again I'd say that this is your optimum stance EXCEPT in gimmick fights where mana management comes into play (such as Vezax in Ulduar).

hmm okay will try it out on some fights then. Been casting ab untill I have 4 stacks and then dumping it with either the proc or either a barrage. Depending on the duration of the fight I soetimes just keep casting ab though wich seems to be pretty doable as well.

basically, what Splishy said:

You cast Arcane blast 4 times because that's when it reaches it's maximum damage and mana burn stack. After that you cast arcane missiles if missile barrage has procced and repeat the rotation. Like I said in the guide, if missile barrage doesn't proc, you can either cast arcane barrage to end the Arcane blast debuff OR keep spamming Arcane blast until missile barrage finally procs (but this burns mana fast).

Casting arcane missiles without missile barrage makes the spell a lot longer to cast and in that time you could have casted an extra arcane blast. So always make sure you have missile barrage before using arcane missiles. I tend to forget about it alot.

About your fire spec, why do you have arcane focus? It only works for arcane spells which you dont use as fire mage. Torment the weak might be handy in solo pve or pvp but I have never seen a snared or slowed boss.

I have to invest some points into either Arcane focus or Arcane stability, Both of them are useless but Arcane focus may help a tad if im Counterspelling or Decursing.

I have an addon that shows me when Torment the weak is up, and it is up on bosses quite often.

Dar forced me to go fire for LK and this build is the most popular fire build for ICC
